Hello, all!

So, unless there is outcry (!), I think this will be the final monthly “Something to read” Unbox post. I get the sense - and know it myself - that we are all feeling quite overwhelmed by the amount of emails and posts, from those on Substack and elsewhere, and I am not sure whether anyone is finding these Something To Read posts entertaining and interesting. When I began this new Unbox Your Words venture for paid subscribers (as it was then) last September, my thought was that offering not one but two extra posts a month, in addition to my free Highly Irregular Newsletter, would be more value for money. Since then, as I talked about in my March newsletter, I’ve had a long hard think about what the words “more”, “value” and “money” mean to me, and they don’t necessarily go together in my philosophy. I don’t measure value by “more” financial income or subscribers, and it may be that I am offering you “more value” by cutting down what I am sending you by 33% and offering you one less email a month, a little un-bombardment!

This doesn’t mean I won’t be sharing reading recommendations, just that, from now on, I’ll do what I did in this month’s first Unbox Your Words post, which is to include a number of things to read together with the writing provocation/exercise/prompt so you have it all in one. Is there anything else you’d like, that might be useful to you? Something like a live (written) Q&A for an hour on anything writing-related, which I think I could do in the Substack chat, perhaps? All ideas welcome, I’d love to hear from you.

So, for this final Something To Read I thought I’d share a piece by a writer I love who gives me permission over and over again to do things in new ways.
